1000 Abstract/Summary
  • The purpose of the presented publications was to examine the approach and results of pain management at the Shouldice Hospital, which utilizes a complete and specialized method. Located in Canada, the Shouldice Hospital has been a renowned hernia center for 80 years, performing 7,000 hernia operations each year. In the publication “Incidence of opioid use and early postoperative pain intensity after primary unilateral inguinal hernia repair at a single-center specialty hospital”, less than 10% of participants received postoperative opioids, and postoperative pain intensity did differ between those who did and did not receive opioids. In “Matching males and females undergoing non mesh primary unilateral inguinal hernia repair: evaluating sex differences in preoperative and acute postoperative pain”, the results showed no significant differences in postoperative pain when male and female participants were matched on important pain-related variables. In “Matching males and females undergoing Shouldice Repair using a prospective, longitudinal design”, significant differences were observed between male and female participants three months after inguinal hernia surgery, but these differences disappeared at one-year after surgery. In “Quality of life following Shouldice Repair: a prospective cohort study among inguinal hernia patients”, health scores significantly reduced one week after surgery but were significantly higher than preoperative scores at one and six months after surgery. The findings from the presented publications accentuate the specialized approach at the Shouldice Hospital by emphasizing minimal opioid use, no gender differences related to acute postoperative pain and mixed chronic gender differences in postoperative pain, and notable improvements in quality of life after surgery
