The German Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area has re‐evaluated the data on skin absorption of n‐butyl alcohol. n‐Butyl alcohol was previously not designated with an “H” notation. Skin absorption data from animal studies in vivo and from human skin in vitro are conflicting, showing much higher penetration rates in vivo than in vitro. A new in vivo study with the isomeric tert‐butyl alcohol shows a rather low degree of skin absorption. Taking these data as a read‐across, the lower penetration rates of n‐butyl alcohol with human skin in vitro are plausible. n‐Butyl alcohol continues not to be designated with an “H” notation because skin absorption is not expected to contribute to systemic toxicity.
