Risk-based and remote monitoring are now considered integral components of risk-based quality management. They were only hesitantly integrated into clinical trials before the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in March 2020. In the meantime, however, the advantages remote monitoring over on-site monitoring are increasingly being recognised. Accordingly, this new approach is increasingly being adopted, albeit not as a complete alternative but as a supplement to the previous on-site monitoring model. In the following article, the authors compare the feasibility of remote versus traditional on-site monitoring. The advantages include cost and time savings while maintaining high data quality. Limitations are the not infrequent difficulties with system implementation, combined with the initial infrastructure costs incurred.
